Sonoma County is located on California's Pacific coast, north of San Francisco and Marin County and west of the Napa Valley. The county can be divided into two distinct areas: the Sonoma Coast and the Sonoma Valley.
The Sonoma Coast is a rugged Pacific coastline with small coastal towns, rocky cliffs, windswept beaches, coves and bays all connected by the famed Highway 1. The small fishing town of Bodega Bay is the main visitor hub along the coast. The Sonoma Valley, with highway 101 running through it, and the smaller valleys up north are together home to over 200 award-winning wineries. With towns of various sizes and a rich history the area has a true California carefree feel. Touring local vineyards and wineries and participating in guided tours and wine tasting is the most popular and enjoyable way to experience the Sonoma Valley. The county seat and major town in the Sonoma Valley is Santa Rosa, a modern city with 150,000 inhabitants. Other major incorporated towns include Healdsburg, Petaluma and Sonoma. Together those towns offer more than 6,300 full and limited service hotel rooms, over 20 golf courses and over 700 places to eat and drink.
